[ERA : 70s / Pop-psych ] 1970/ KING FOX were a bunch of 15/16-year-old
mop haired school kids who happened to have been blessed with a whole
lot of talent and an ear for a tune. They shot to stardom in 1969/70
with the smash hit "Unforgotten Dreams". The single raced up the charts
to the Top 5 and stayed around for the best part of six months. The
song was decribed as both mysterious and alluring, later being tagged
as an Australian pop-psychedelic classic. The band was formed by year
eleven school students David King & Paul Radcliffe. They joined
forces with fellow year eleven students Billy Field, Andy Evans &
Peter Muller and while trying to concentrate on final year studies they
were receiving massive radio airplay and media attention, plus an
appearance on TV's Bandstand. Rumour had it that the band laid down a
complete album of original music at producer Martin Erdman's studio
during the school holidays of January 1970. Media & fans alike
awaited expectantly fot its release. But there was no album.
Or was
there? Over the next three decades the members went on to forge
succesful careers : Singer/songwriter David King, formed King
Furniture; singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Paul Radcliffe is
today a successful musician and producer: Vocalist/bass guitarist Billy
Field hit the charts later with "Bad Habits" and later opened his own
Paradise Recording Studios; drummer Andy Evans is one of Australia's
top drummers and well respected within the music industry and
vocalist/keyboard player Peter Muller is still making music and working
as a HealthCare professional.
King Fox producer, Martin Erdman produced
Australia's first million selling record in the USA, when "The Lord's
Prayer" by Sister Janet Mead raced up the charts in 1974. Erdman also
produced recordings by Rolf Harris, Jimmy Little & Peter Allen ("I
still call Australia home") plus dozens of local bands including Flake,
Harry Young & Sabbath, McPhee, Samael Lilith, Galadrial and many
more.
Some thirty odd years after King Fox reportedly made an album,
Martin Erdman, whilst dusting off some old boxes at his home, found the
the missing King Fox tapes. Yes, there was indeed an album, that had
never been released. He and Paul Radcliffe set about mixing these truly
(un)forgotten tracks during 2007.
So it's a new album - never before
heard - and now released 38 years after it was first recorded.
